It's March and the weather experts are promising a warming "start" to the month which makes me suspicious, why do they have to use the word start - is the middle and end going to be more of this snow insanity?
Fortunately I love it when other people experience joy and I happen to have several friends who LOVE snow so I choose to embrace their joy and be happy for them, it doesn’t always work but the effort is there!
I just want to do spring stuff! This will be my first year in a long, long time to work on a real garden -sowing seeds, filling a greenhouse, choosing which flowers and herbs we are going to grow in the new gardens at Swan Song Saltwater Farm. We’ve joined MOFGA (Maine Organic Farmers and Gardeners), I’ve ordered a “gothic” style forty foot tunnel greenhouse to complement our current charming but small version from last year. We are graduating from small and fun to pretty serious stuff.
This year’s goal is to start flower farming which will inevitably start with experimenting with what grows well and what flowers our Farmstore customers want most.We are also developing a substantial organic herb garden with the intent of selling to local restaurants and of course we are planting our beautiful raised bed garden with peas climbing the picturesque trellises and a promise of last year’s asparagus starting this year quite plentifully.
OH! And we are adding to our orchard bringing in some unique varieties. The gardens are part of a huge 2026 plan for all of our properties but that’s the part I am focusing on today,and taking a break from to share March with you. Whatever your spring plans and hopes include I hope you embrace them with passion and gusto and just go for it!
